Write Your Legislators about State Aid Reduction!

This year’s State budget proposes an overall reduction in state aid of $172 million dollars to Long Island schools. Under the proposed budget, Long Island will not receive its fair share.

It is so important that you write your legislators and the Governor to tell them that Long Island will not receive it’s fair share in State aid under the proposed State budget. You can click on this link http://www.nassaupta.org/committees/legislation.htm and enter your zip code where it says “Write Your Legislators” to get their contact information. Listed below that on the same site is a link to a sample letter to the Governor.

They need to hear from you! Write today!

“AFRICAN RHYTHM TAP” Arts In Education Program

Old Bethpage families! Ask your children about the program they saw in celebration of Black History Month on Thursday, February 25th, “African Rhythm Tap”!

This Arts-in-Education program could not have been possible without support from you, our families. Your PTA membership and your support of our PTA fundraisers, allows PTA to bring your children this event, along with other Arts-in-Education programs that we have scheduled throughout the school year.

To see future programs that we have scheduled, go to our website www.oldbethpagepta.org and click on the “calendar” link at the top of the page. There you’ll be able to see, month by month, all of the Arts-in-Education programs we have planned for your children. You can also see a summary of our Arts-In-Ed programs at http://www.oldbethpagepta.org/pta/committees/programs/arts-in-education/2/.

Be Cautious About Giving Info to Census Workers, by the BBB

With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.

The big question is – how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:

If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home.

Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census.

REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON’T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.

AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

For more advice on avoiding identity theft and fraud, visit http://www.bbb.org/us/article/bbb-alerts-consumers-about-us-census-workers-be-cooperative-but-cautious-10306.

PLEASE SHARE THIS INFO WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

PARP 2010 Reminders

PARP, our annual celebration of books and reading, wraps up this week. It’s been a lot of fun with author Suzy Kline; the Pushcart Players performing ‘Stone Soup and Other Stories;’ and every day, a different class sharing their favorite book during the P.A. announcements! A few reminders:

–Please send your child to school in RED (because we’re all well-read!) on Friday, January 29th. Mrs. Gray will be holding a special PARP assembly.

–Send in your gently used children’s books. We will be donating them to charities in Huntington and in Ethiopia.

–Read, read, read with your child… and send in your child’s PARP reading log by this Friday. And next time you’re in our school, check out our PARP Wall Chart (outside the All-Purpose room), which is tracking the PARP reading success of our kids and will be up for a few weeks.

Thank you for your continued support of our PARP program!
